Is your IT provider holding you prisoner?

Let me ask you a question. If your current IT provider was not around anymore, do you know where all of your network information, usernames, passwords, data-backups, software licenses and disks, key codes, and other important information is stored? Would you be able to log into your server? Would you have access to all of your employee's workstations? Do you know where your data-backups are stored and how to access them? Do you have clear network documentation so that another IT person could come in and pick-up where they left off? If not, then your current IT provider is holding you hostage. Held Prisoner

If they are doing a good job, you might not realize shortcomings; however, you should still have clear documentation of your network in case they fail to deliver proper support. If you aren't really happy with their work and aren't sure if they are doing a good job, that's even more reason you should have clear network documentation.

Occasionally I meet potential new clients who aren't totally satisfied with their IT provider's support and service, but stay with them out of fear or a feeling that there are no alternatives. As one business owner to another, this is never a good reason to stay with your current provider.

You must be able to trust the person you have given administrative access and power to over your computer network. A truly ethical and professional IT provider would never hold their client hostage or do anything to prevent the client's wish to hand over the "virtual keys to the kingdom" to another company. Any good IT service provider should be able to walk you through the transition to prevent that person from doing any damage.

Another reason business owners stay with their current IT service provider is simply Ethics because they don't know what good service is supposed to be, and therefore have lowered their expectations. Why do so many businesses pay for substandard computer support? Simply because they don't know how to truly verify that their network is secure and they end up having to take someone at their word. Don't let this happen to you.

If you are not happy with your current IT provider and feel they are not doing the best job possible, then call us in for a second opinion.
